June 26, 2025 - McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme are ending their doughnut partnership, bringing a close to a brief but high-profile collaboration between two American food giants. The partnership, which began with a pilot in Kentucky in 2023 and expanded to more than 2,400 locations across the U.S., will officially end on July 2, 2025.
The partnership allowed McDonald’s to offer Krispy Kreme’s iconic Original Glazed doughnuts—both individually and in six-packs—alongside its regular breakfast and beverage menu. The move was seen as a way to boost breakfast traffic and test co-branded offerings.
However, Krispy Kreme announced it would not move forward with its plans to expand nationwide within McDonald’s outlets. The decision, according to Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth, stemmed from the inability to make the model profitable despite strong initial customer interest.
“We couldn't find a path to reach long-term profitability while supporting the operational complexity of delivering fresh doughnuts daily to thousands of McDonald’s locations,” Charlesworth said in a recent statement.
McDonald’s echoed the sentiment, noting that while the partnership delivered on quality and customer experience, the economics no longer made sense for Krispy Kreme. McDonald’s Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, Alyssa Buetikofer, emphasized that both companies remain on good terms and value the insights gained from the collaboration.
The end of the partnership also comes amid broader strategic shifts at Krispy Kreme. The company has been refocusing its efforts on expanding its presence in grocery stores, convenience outlets, and international franchises. Meanwhile, McDonald’s is doubling down on core menu items, digital innovation, and affordability amid changing consumer behaviors.
Customers can still enjoy Krispy Kreme doughnuts at the brand’s standalone stores and retail locations. But starting next month, McDonald’s breakfast menus will no longer include the sugary treat—a bittersweet farewell to a short-lived fast-food fusion.
