Cooper Flagg’s leap from Duke freshman to top overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft was powered by a stat-studded college season and glowing scouting reports—clearly earning him the Dallas Mavericks’ first selection.
Standing 6'8" with a 7‑foot wingspan, Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game in his single season at Duke. He rounded out his profile with 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, showing elite defensive instincts. His efficiency stood out too—shooting 48.1% from the field and 38.5% from three-point territory.
Flagg became only the fourth freshman ever to win the legendary Wooden Award, joining icons like Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis. He also captured national player of the year honors and led Duke to a 35–4 record and NCAA Final Four berth.
NBA scouts praised his two-way prowess. According to HoopsHype, “elite two-way connector” Flagg posted strong metrics in defensive rebounds, blocks, and steals, with a transition and spot-up scoring efficiency in the 85th+ percentile. CBS Sports gave him an A grade, calling him “a home run for Dallas” and noting his readiness to contribute immediately.
Flagg also shattered ACC records: he logged over 500 points and 100 assists, becoming the first freshman in 25 years to do so. He earned a record 12 ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
This statistical dominance—spanning scoring, playmaking, defense, and efficiency—sealed his spot as the consensus No. 1 pick. For the Mavericks, Flagg represents a generational talent who can rebuild the franchise with immediate two-way impact and long-term star potential.
